Professional Development

Ocean State PMI is always looking for ways to assist our members with their professional development including PMP Prep classes, partnership with colleges and universities and other chapters to provide you with the services you have come to expect from OSPMI.

STUDY GROUP

Ocean State PMI sponsors a spring and fall session of our popular PMP Prep Study Group each year. The study group is not for basic project management training but is a gathering of professional project managers preparing to sit for the PMP exam. Members of the Ocean State PMI chapter volunteer to work with the study group students to answer questions, share test preparation strategies, and support students in their studies. PMP facilitators and students that have participated in the Study Group program in the past agree that the friendly atmosphere and teamwork eases the hard work of preparing for the exam and is motivational. Registration and Study Group attendance may be used to fulfill 20 of the 35 Contact Hours of Education stipulation outlined on page 2 in the PMI PMP Exam Eligibility Requirements.

Approach: The student members of the Study Group shall be grouped into small Knowledge Area teams (usually two students) that are paired with a PMP coach. Each team chooses a specific knowledge area (PMBOK chapter), develops a study outline, and puts together a PowerPoint slideshow covering that topic. Then, the team presents their PowerPoint show to the entire study group and shares their study notes. The chapter web-based message boards are used to maintain templates, store completed study materials for download and as a communication venue for self-directed and group study activities. Weekly meetings are 2 1/2 hours, 6:00 - 8:30 PM on Wednesday evenings. Students are asked to join at least one Knowledge Area team, and each team is expected to prepare and present once during the 10 week session.

Current Session: The Fall 2008 study group runs from September 17th - November 19th. It is a ten week program that runs on Wednesday evenings from 6pm - 8:30pm. A light meal will be provided at 6:00pm and class will start promptly at 6:30pm.

Next Session: We are tentatively planning the next PMP Study Group session for Spring 2009.

Group Size: The group is limited to 25 students. The session must have at least 10 students enrolled or the session is canceled.

Location: The Fall 2008 session is being held at:

CVS Corporate Headquarters
One CVS Drive
Woonsocket, RI 02895
